Traffic laws and fines have been integral to Dubai's road safety strategy, particularly as the city has experienced explosive growth and development. Initially, the traffic fine system was established to manage a smaller, less complex road network, focusing primarily on severe infractions like speeding and reckless driving. These early fines were designed to instill a culture of discipline among drivers in a rapidly urbanizing landscape.
Significant Changes Over the Years
Over the years, as Dubai's population surged and the number of vehicles increased, the traffic fine system saw several significant changes. One major revision was the introduction of automated traffic monitoring systems, which expanded the scope of violations that could be detected, such as running red lights or lane indiscipline. Here are key changes:
These changes were influenced by various factors, including advances in technology, changes in urban density, and evolving public safety priorities.

Driving through the energetic streets of the UAE, with its heart in cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, calls for a sharp awareness of traffic laws and fines. For anyone behind the wheel, knowing how to handle these fines is crucial for a smooth journey through this place where tradition and modernity collide in a stunning display. Thankfully, the task is made easier thanks to the online services provided by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the local police, which streamline the process of managing traffic fines. This guide is designed to equip you with the knowledge and tools you need to effectively deal with traffic fines, keeping you in line with the UAE's strict traffic regulations.
How do you get Traffic Fines in Abu Dhabi and Dubai
Here, traffic fines are not just penalties; they're part of a comprehensive strategy to keep the roads safe and orderly. Managed by the RTA and enforced by local police in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, these fines aim to curb traffic violations, ranging from speeding to not wearing seat belts, with each fine specifically designed to correct particular misbehaviours. The ultimate aim is to safeguard the wellbeing of everyone on the road, ensuring a safe and organized driving environment.
The Role of RTA and Local Police
The RTA oversees transportation and road infrastructure, sets policies, and implements systems to promote smooth traffic flow and safety throughout the UAE. Meanwhile, the local police in Abu Dhabi and Dubai play a crucial role in enforcing these rules, keeping an eye on road safety, and handing out fines for any infractions. Together, they form the backbone of the UAE's traffic management, using technology and smart initiatives to raise the bar for road safety.

While tyres are checked upon the yearly re-registration of vehicles for the wear and tear, drivers must also do regular checks.
Traffic authorities in Abu Dhabi has urged motorists to check their vehicle tyres regularly to avoid driving on worn-out ones to prevent crashes during the hot months.
Brigadier Khalifa Mohammad Al Khaili, director-general of Traffic and Patrols Directorate in Abu Dhabi Police has warned about tyre bursts due to old worn-out tyres. Police figures have revealed last year figures that 28 accidents occurred due to tyre bursts has caused death of 14 people and seven serious injuries.
"Drivers should check the condition of tyres, before embarking on long journeys or driving on highways," said Al Khaili. "Motorists should use good quality tyres to avoid accidents especially during the hot weather." The police said tyres unfit for use on the roads are the prime cause of car overturning.
Thomas Edelmann, founder of roadsafetyuae.com, said that about five per cent of all road fatalities happening per year in the UAE is due to tyre bursts. "Tyre burst is attributable to poor tire maintenance and lack of 'pre-drive vehicle checks," he said.
"In the hot season, motorists must periodically - or ideally every time before we start our trip - quickly walk around our vehicles and check their safety worthiness, especially with regards to the proper condition of the tires. Just a few days ago, we witnessed a tragic accident killing four people and injuring two due to poorly fixed tires."
While tyres are checked upon the yearly re-registration of vehicles for the wear and tear, drivers must also do regular checks.
"Exploding tyres pose a big threat as steering may become uncontrollable, especially when the burst occurs on the frontal tyres," said Eldermann. "Add that to the sudden shock of the driver who might take abrupt action. In addition, tyre debris on the roads also pose danger to all other vehicles around."
He noted that all vehicle tyres must be procured, fitted and maintained properly, considering the taxing climate of the UAE. "Heat plays an important contributor to burst tyres and we see numbers spike in the hot months of the year. Regularly check the state of all four tyres at the same time for signs of obvious or abnormal wear and tear," said Eldermann.
Replacement of tyres
Yusuf Kiyengo, service supervisor and tyre consultant at Michelin Central Motors and Equipment in Musaffah Industrial Area, said the maximum recommended usage of tyres is 50,000km.
A tread depth gauge helps to check the service life of the tyres, available at any tyre specialist, or the user can rely on the wear indicators that most tyres have. "Check the pressure of tyres at least once in two weeks as poorly inflated tires affect the overall performance of the vehicle, including braking distance, handling, safety and fuel consumption," he said.
Rotate regularly
Drivers need to rotate the tyres in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. "It is good to switch front tyres to rear after about 5,000 km. With this, the wear is optimised over the four tires as front tyres are used much more than the rear ones," he said. "We always offer this service free of charge to customers maintaining their vehicles at our workshop or those who bought tyres from our shops."

Tyres in the region should bear approval and certification from the Gulf Standards Organisation (GSO) - certifying that these tyres can be utilised safely across warm climate conditions present in the region
Regular tyre check is a must during hot summer months as tyre burst is one of the major causes of road accidents, often leading to serious injuries and death, according to a safety expert.
"Tyre safety is important especially now that summer is coming to reach its peak as we enter the month of August," Kenneth Arnold, general manager at ZDegree, a Dubai-based automotive maintenance company, told Khaleej Times.
Early this week, Khaleej Times has reported that tyre burst has been blamed for 56 traffic accidents in one emirate alone (Ras Al Khaimah) in the first six months of the year. Some road accidents have also been attributed to tyre bursts in major highways in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
"Vehicles in the UAE have to deal with harsh climate, including hot rays from the sun," Arnold explained. "Tyres play a significant role in ensuring the car's safety because they are the only part of the vehicle that comes in direct contact with the road's surface.
"Therefore, tyres in the region should bear approval and certification from the Gulf Standards Organisation (GSO) - certifying that these tyres can be utilised safely across warm climate conditions present in the region."
Arnold noted that several awareness and training programmes are being implemented by tyre companies and government entities like the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) to reduce the proliferation of non-certified tyres in the UAE.
"Those initiatives help consumers to differentiate between sub-standard products and efficient ones. They are also made aware to understand the production week mentioned on a tyre's sidewall so they can insist on purchasing only a fresh set of tyres," noted Arnold.
Another initiative is ESMA's move to involve tyre companies in promoting radio-frequency identification (RFID) tagging. RFID enables manufacturers to identify, track and manage tyres fro the production to distribution process. But more importantly, it is the utmost responsibility of car owners to check their tyres, Arnold underlined.
