Things To Know When Buying New Tyres

Nowadays, most people don’t buy new tyres in UAE until it’s too late, which is usually when they fail or start showing signs of wear.

If you are like that, you should know that neglecting the life of your tyres can put yours and the safety of your passengers at risk. On the other hand, new tyres are always a good decision, especially if you have “worn” your old tyre set for a couple of seasons.

On a side note, the tyre is one of the most important parts of your vehicle. It is the only point of contact with the ground and a major safety point. Besides, tyres are responsible for most of the grip, traction, handling and braking, and in most cases, can help you make most of your fuel economy.

If you are considering the purchase of new tyres for your vehicle, below we are listing some tips that can help you make a great decision.

1.   Tyres look alike, but it doesn’t mean they are equal

All tyres are made of rubber, but that doesn’t mean they are equal in terms of performance. If you visit our tyre shop, you will see that there are tyres with different prices, cheap, as well as more expensive tyre models.

Generally speaking, more expensive models are made by more popular tyre manufacturers such as Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Michelin, Dunlop, Yokohama, and others. And just like many other things in life, choosing a reliable tyre brand gives you better performance.

At the same time, this doesn’t mean that in order to be safe, you need the most expensive set of tyres. A more important thing to consider is the exact tyre size and the profile of a tyre model that matches your driving habits, weather conditions and budget.

2.   Timing is important

Knowing when to replace your tyres is essential. You don’t have to be the most experienced mechanic to know how worn out your tyres are.

To see how solid your tyres are, you can always perform the coin test – place a small 1 Emirati dirham coin into several tread grooves across the tyre. If the tread covers at least a third of the coin, your tyre is good to go. If you can see almost the entire coin when placed in the tread, you need a new set of tyres.

And if this test sounds complicated for you to figure out whether you need new tyres in the UAE, you should know that a tyre set should last at least four or five seasons tops before it needs a replacement. If you are a heavy driver and spend a lot of time on the road, you should replace your tyres even sooner.

3.   Deciphering tyre codes

This is one of the biggest mistakes customers make when choosing tyres in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi or any other location in the UAE. Even though cleaning up the dirt to see the exact codes on your tyres’ sidewall is not pleasant, knowing which tyres your vehicle is currently “wearing” is important when replacing them with a new set.

So, once you locate the number which is something like “235/45 R19,” you should know how to decipher it. In the example that we showed:

  • “235” relates to section width of tyre in millimeters (235 millimeters in this example),
  • “45” relates to the aspect ratio or height of the sidewall described as a percentage of the tyre’s section width (in this example, it is 45% of the tyre’s width),
  • “R19” where the “R” relates to the radial ply construction of the tyre, while the “19” refers to the diameter of wheel rim measured in inches (1 inch=2.54cm).

4.   Choosing the right size

Many vehicle owners don’t know that they can actually choose a set of tyres that is different in size – compared to the one that their vehicle currently has. While some choose bigger wheels and tyres to enhance the look of their car and make it sportier, bigger wheels and tyres also means more vibrations, greater fuel consumption and a less comfortable ride.

The best way to choose the right size for your new tyres in UAE is to choose a set that fits your car model and set of wheels well, without it looking too aggressive. Also, make sure that the tyres fit the recommended speed rating and can therefore handle your car up to a designated top speed. Load rating is another thing to consider – each tyre has a unique load rating which should align to the weight of our vehicle.

Not everyone knows these metrics, which is why many prefer talking to a tyre expert in UAE.

5.   Your spare tyre is equally important

If you are looking for new tyres and considering the purchase of a set of four, you might want to think twice and see if a spare tyre could be included in your budget. The truth is, it is always good to have a new and full-sized spare tyre, especially if your current model is outdated or you don’t have one.

Aside from maintaining the aesthetics of your car, having a new spare tyre is a useful and practical alternative to any inflator kit or sealant. It can also help you maintain the same speed and driving, even if you experience a flat tyre.
